Robespierre and Danton were good friends and fought with each other during the French Revolution. However, by 1793, Robespierre had taken control of France and was determined to crush any dissent through a series of mass executions known as the Reign of Terror. After living in relative isolation in the French countryside, Danton—who was widely recognized as a representative of the people—returned to Paris to oppose Robespierre’s brutal reign and urge the populace to demand their rights. Even from a friend and coworker, Robespierre was unable to face such a threat, and he disregarded a scheme to apprehend and execute Danton and his supporters.
